“Alison’s mentorship during the online writing workshop helped me surmount longstanding inhibitions and start writing again the way I did as a child—with creativity and joy. She taught me to treat my writing as something I am loyal to and show up for, not as a test I must pass. During workshop, we all spent time writing, reading our writing aloud, and sharing feedback in real time (not just by writing critiques outside of workshop, although we did that, too). This non-hierarchical format fostered an environment of trust in which we took creative and personal risks and mined our experiences in new ways.
